Where to go in Takayama? 5 places you should visit

Takayama is a small city but there are a lot of places to visit and see. If you don’t know where to go, we recommend that you visit these 5 places below!
- Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine(and Yatai Kaikan)
It is the oldest shrine in Takayama and said to be built in the 4th century. During Takayama Autumn Festival in October, Festival floats line up right in front of it. There’s a museum of Festival Floats called Yatai Kaikan near the wooden holy gate of the shrine. You can learn about Takayama festival and the history.

- Hida Folk Village
It is a museum on the west side of Takayama.
There are more than 30 traditional houses from the mountainous area of Gifu prefecture(called Hida region).
They were originally build in the Edo period(1603 to 1867). In 1971,
the houses were moved from the original locations to make a museum.
Various kinds of tools and materials are displayed in each house.

*You can take a bus at Bus terminal next to JR station.(10 min ride. Take Sarubobo Bus and get off at Hida-no sato-Shita. It costs 210 yen for one way)

Entrance fee: 700yen for an adult, 200 yen for a kid under junior high school age
- Morning Market
Everyday from around 6:00 until noon, morning markets are held by the Miyagawa river and in front of Jinya. There will be some stands selling local crafts, vegetables, pickles, and so on. You can get to talk to locals and have fun chatting while shopping.
It is an old government office, the only of the kind existing from Edo period in Japan.
The main building remains today was constructed in 1816.
The rice storehouse was built more than 400 years ago.
You can take a guided tour and see more than 250 historical materials on display.

- Nakabashi Bridge
It is a symbolic red bridge that goes across Miyagawa river. There are Sakura trees around and it is a popular photo spot for tourist. During night, it is illuminated and it will be a good feature in your vacation photos.
